When you see a child (or even an adult) reading a 600-page book, just for fun, it’s a good thing, right? Well, there are two sides to everything, and the Harry Potter Books (and now the Twilight books) are no exception.
Here is an interesting article on POWER, LOVE AND HARRY POTTER, written by the Wondering Preacher. He believes the books focus on the GOOD VS. EVIL / POWER VS LOVE aspect, on the importance of building character, and how the author JK Rowling skims over the things that should not be focused on (like spells).
The theme of Love runs throughout the book – the love of Harry’s mother for Harry, the love of Hogwart’s students by Dumdledore, Harry Potter’s love for his friends, and so on.
On the flip side is the article at Let Us Reason Ministries. This writer focuses on the negative aspects, the occult, witchcraft, curses, magic, evil. To be fair, I read this article too, but I tend to agree with the first article, that the *magical world* of Harry Potter is extraordinary fun, and not a bad thing.
When the books first came out, I confess I would not let my kids read them! I felt the way the second blogger does. So to educate myself, I read all the Harry Potter books (so that I could be prepared with my own opinion when I spoke against the books).
BUT what happened instead was a new love for the Harry Potter character and his adventures in his magical world. I have read all the books and have seen all the movies thus far. Though I LIKE THE BOOKS MUCH BETTER THAN THE MOVIES, I do look forward to the final movies coming out as well, and will watch them with anticipation and sadness that the series is ending.
JK Rowling took her dream to be a writer and developed her ideas, bringing them to life, and millions of new readers were born. The same is true for Stephanie Meyer and the TWILIGHT BOOKS. I have always refused to read anything about vampires, and was upset at first that young people were reading these books. Then I read one… and then all of them.
I will never read another vampire book nor see a vampire movie because other vampire characters have sharp teeth and show blood (for example, I won’t watch the vampire tv shows that piggybacked on the success of the Twilight phenomenon). But the Twilight Series is simply a love story in a fascinating world. A world with NO BLOOD-DRIPPING SCARY TEETH!
I hate to see the neck-biting commercials on tv for the new vampire shows, that really bothers me… but I’m a new fan of Stephanie Meyer because of the non-teeth vampire characters she created. Perhaps the final movies will show bloody teeth, you never know, but to date they have not. If they do, I’ll be hugely disappointed. But until then, I am still a fan.
Harry Potter final movies will be released in the USA November 19 2010 and July 15 2011.
