A Horse of a Different Color

2013RanchosVisit-ResizeSRP (45) 2013RanchosVisit-ResizeSRP (46)Ranchos Visitadores – Several hundred ranchers and horses came through Solvang yesterday (May 4, 2013) for their annual visit. The ranchers wore pink shirts (“not too tough to wear pink”) for a Breast Cancer Cure fundraiser, and one Mule went the extra mile by wearing pink all over.

Said to be the largest riding group of its kind in the world. The Rancheros stop at the Old Mission Santa Inés {in the Santa Ynez Valley} for the blessing of their horses by the padres. Hundreds of riders make the annual pilgrimage.

Hundreds of riders on horseback and in wagons — all wearing pink — arrived in Solvang when the Rancheros Visitadores made their 83rd trip to Mission Santa Ines for the blessing of the riders.

The blessing drew a large crowd, creating a colorful parade ground that fills the open land between Mission Drive and the mission buildings.

Wearing pink is part of the “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” national campaign started in 2004 by entrepreneur Terry Wheatley, a breast cancer survivor, and Karl Stressman, then an employee of Wrangler and now commissioner of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PCRA).

Last year, the Rancheros raised $65,000 and they expect to raise $80,000 in 2013. A check presentation to the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara with Sansum Clinic is planned at the blessing.

Rancheros General Manager John Balch expects 800 to 850 horseback riders and 25 covered wagons, carriages and coaches this year.

The Rancheros Visitadores, or the “Visiting Ranchers,” is a men’s social club founded in 1930 to commemorate traditional rides that once were made from ranch to ranch. Members come from many states and several foreign countries.

Each year after the Kentucky Derby broadcast, the Rancheros ride on horseback, in carriages and wagons from Jackson Camp to the mission for the blessing and then move on to Janeway Camp, property they own near Lake Cachuma.

Vintage Street Car – Old Dining Car Cafe Abandoned – Moved

Photo Credit: City of Buellton CA Facebook page

UPDATE: Remember the old dining cars cafe I wrote about? Well it looks like someone bought the former street cars and moved them to Morro Bay, where hopefully they will end up as a new dining car cafe someday. After seeing the picture of one of the street cars being moved the other day, I decided to go and look at the cafe and see if anything was left. You can see that not much remains. Kind of sad, it was a landmark in it’s day, but time marches on and everything old is new again, so when I learn of the dining cars’ future, I will update.

UPDATE JUNE 22, 2012: New Article with more images (including interior pics) on where the street cars / dining cars are going!

NOTE: I have moved my photography hobby blog to Sweet Rascal Photos. Please visit me there.

Car Show Photos Part 3

I think this was my favorite edited photo of the car show pics. I have used the cinema editing feature a few times now and it does not work well with many photos, but with some it is just grand!

The car is nice of course, but my favorite part about it was the little boy doll at the front. So cute.

My grandsons thought this U.S. Army car was very cool.

The poster sign in front of this classic car allowed me to teach my grandsons about “restoring” old vehicles. The sign showed before, during and after photos. The boys were kind of amazed at how bad it had looked before!

This race car had the name Mark Allan on it. Don’t know who that is, as I do not follow racing. My oldest grandson liked this car the most.

Grandson and I were surprised how SMALL AND CRAMPED the driver’s seat is (there is no passenger seat!) It was so closed off that you could not be claustrophobic or you would never get in it.

Zero traction on these tires!

This is my LAST PHOTO blog post here. (I had to finish my Car Show series!) I will be doing all future photo blogging over at my new page: Sweet Rascal Photos. (Notice I did Not say Sweet Rascal Photography, since I am not a photographer!) Please join me over there for more point-and-shoot photo-sharing fun! ~ Tricia

P.S. If you want to stay here with me at Tricias Things too, I would love to have you! This is where I will share all kinds of other ‘things’ that don’t fall into one category (like photography). Thank you to all who followed me, and I hope to see you over at Sweet Rascal Photos too! :)

Car Show Old Gas Pumps

Antique Vintage gas pumps and old cars were at Olivera’s auto repair station in Buellton Calfornia for a fun Car Show. I showed the first batch of photos from the car show yesterday, and I will have one more batch tomorrow (with some of our faves). Today I wanted to share the location of the car show because the way they decorated this auto repair shop was like a blast from the past with the restored gas pumps. Very cool!

Elephant Seals, San Simeon, Moonstone Beach

Elephant Seals at San Simeon. Not enough zoom on my camera for any close-ups.

These pictures were taken on a very cold, rainy, dreary day at Moonstone Beach in Cambria, and though we were chilly, we had a great time in this beautiful area. Wish the sun had been shining though, so my pictures would have shown up a little better.

I cannot remember what kind of birds these were. There were hundreds of them.

Monterey Bay

Monterey Bay, California

I thought I had already posted these photos from last year of my visit to Monterey, but cannot find them. My photo blog is for my own memories as well as for sharing, so I am posting them again (or for the first time) to make sure I have them.

Candy Store!

I really do not like to have my photo taken, but I am trying to put up a few for my family’s memories. This photo of my hubby and I was taken by a 10 year old friend whom we were with.

When we arrived at Monterey Bay the sun was starting to go down. I have no idea how to take pictures in that kind of lighting, so I fiddled with the few settings on my point-and-shoot camera but they turned out worse than just leaving it at automatic. I had to boost the pictures a bit in my default photo editor in order to see them, as they were too dark and dull.

Regardless, the last of the sunlight on the boats and the water was very pretty. I wish I could have captured it better, but this is the best I could do. I like it anyway. :)

Wagons on the Rooftop

AJ Spurs Steak House Restaurant in Buellton CA has a great old western decor both inside and out.

While my husband and I waited a few minutes for our guests to arrive, I pulled out my phone and took a few pictures of the wagons on the rooftop and wagon wheel benches.

I almost backed up into some cacti (not shown) while moving far enough into the parking lot to take a roof photo.

Very rustic, countrified setting!

Thank goodness for camera-phones! I would have been wishing I had brought my point and shoot camera with me.

If I had been able to take inside photos (the interior is dark and I was not sure if it would be appropriate) you would have seen images of bison (or buffalo?) and bear, along with other wild creatures and decor. Maybe next time….

p.s.

If you are vegan or offended by the idea of killing animals, I apologize. I am Not a hunter, nor a fan of killing animals, and yet I do like a good burger now and then. Also, this is just such a unique atmosphere and ambiance. But young children might get freaked out by the life sized giant animals when you walk inside. Interesting place though and good food!
